Redesigned QuickMark for iPhone Now With Preview, Cloud Sync, Check In, And More

When we first released QuickMark for iPhone back in March 2009, it was the first iPhone app to automatically scan multiple barcode formats. But despite adding several features during this time, our user interface remained pretty much the same and in some cases our feature set has outgrown the UI.

Today we introduce our biggest app update to date with a more organized look that hopes to make scanning and creating mobile barcodes on your iPhone more intuitive and enjoyable.

It is always refreshing to see a new design, but more importantly, we are introducing some very useful new features.

Preview

How many times have you scanned a QR Code and the decoded URL gives you no clue to what or where it may lead?

What if it happens to be a shortened URL, which is even more mysterious? Did you become disinterested or afraid to follow through on the URL?

This is where our new Preview feature comes into play. QuickMark will try to present you a Preview (small graphic and short description) about where the scanned URL leads without requiring you to actually visit that URL.

And if you have ever wondered how many people actually scanned this QR Code that you see on some newspaper or magazine, Stats will give you a glimpse of that. It displays two simple stats aggregated from other QuickMark users: number of scans and its click rate to let you know how many times have other users acted upon it.

Preview and Stats are provided for the following types of mobile barcodes: Web, Location, Event, and 1D barcodes (such as UPC or EAN on products or ISBN on books).

Cloud Sync (Scan & Create History)

If you have multiple mobile devices or often switch devices, it can be helpful if you can have access to your data no matter which device you are using.  Thus we are allowing you to store the barcodes you scan or create on our service so you can easily access them any time you reset or get a new iPhone or Android. (More on our Android update soon.)

We are starting everyone with quite a bit of storage space (1000 entries, 500 for scanned and 500 for created barcodes) and we’ll see how that goes. Just sign up for a free account from within the app or login with Facebook to enable sync. Easy as pie.

Facebook Check In

If you have not tried creating a QR Code with geo-coordinates for map or navigation services, you are missing out. But now there is yet another new function you can use with these barcodes that contain location information: check in to Facebook Places!

You can either create Location barcodes from our website or use our iPhone app to create one based on your current location. If you are an shop or restaurant owner and want to encourage users to check in, why not post such a QR Code in your venue to remind your end users to do so?

There Really Is More!

With the new design and useful features mentioned above, it may be easy to overlook some features. For example, it is now easier than ever to create your own QR Codes with QuickMark on your iPhone. And since most of the mobile barcodes are links to websites, we have also made it easier for you to Like a webpage or send it to popular services such as Instapaper, Read it Later, or Evernote for later.  Features from previous versions such as sharing a scanned contact via Bluetooth, synchronizing a scan result to a Mac over Wi-Fi, decode image from file, and etc. are also still here.

We hope that this update is as exciting for you as it is for us. Please don’t be shy to send us any questions or comments you may have (via Twitter, Facebook, or email). And do not forget to rate our app on the App Store!
