Scan Barcodes On Your Mac With QuickMark

As some of you may have learned through MacStories’ preview, we had plans to support the Mac OS with Apple’s introduction of the Mac App Store.

Well, it has finally arrived and is now available on the Mac App Store.

Similar to our PC version, the app provides 3 different methods for scanning a barcode:

1. Camera Mode (webcam)

This is the obvious one. Most new Macs come with built-in cameras, so we use it to scan barcodes that are either printed on someone’s business card, the newspaper, and just about anything else.

But sometimes, we come across barcodes such as QR Codes while browsing the web. Since we cannot detach the built-in camera for it to view the screen, we have implemented the next 2 methods to solve this problem.

2. Transparent Mode

When switched to Transparent Mode, only the frame of QuickMark’s main window will remain and you will be able to ‘see through’ our main app window. At this point, you can move the main window around and place it over a barcode image that you see and try to decode it with a click of a button.

3. File Mode (with drag-and-drop)

Last but not least, you can also decode barcode images file by dragging-and-dropping a file into our app.

This first version (v3.8.1) supports the following 2D barcodes: QR Code, Data Matrix, and Quick Code.

If you want to create some QR Codes to have some scanning fun, you can either use the app’s built-in barcode generator or visit our website for more options (e.g. for creating QR Codes that opens Google Maps, address book contacts, etc.)

Here is the Mac App Store link. We hope you find it useful and please feel free to drop us a message if you have any questions or comments. Happy scanning!
